#### Aims
We model and simulate the biomechanical behaviour of the elastic **mitral valve soft tissue** in the human heart, subjected to surgical manipulation during and after **annuloplasty** surgery. A segmented mitral valve geometry is meshed and annotated in order for an FEM simulation, and boundary conditions are defined to model the natural forces during the cardiac cycle and the external forces through annuloplasty.
The HiFlow³-based simulation application is capable of **simulating the post-surgical behavior of the mitral valve**, both with respect to the **closing behavior** and with respect to the **upcoming stress distribution** which indicate potential tissue rupture.
#### Why using HiFlow³?
The mitral valve simulation application is build upon the open-source C++ Finite Element toolkit HiFlow³, which allows to **efficiently simulate the post-surgical behavior of the elastic mitral valve**.
The boundary value problem formulation was reformulated in the weak form, and accordingly implemented in the assembly part of the simulation application. We used 3D Lagrangian Elements (tetrahedra, 12 degrees of freedom per element) with a total resolution of approximately 50.000 degrees of freedom, which roughly corresponds to the imaging resolution.
